2017 Planning Awards

Today APA Louisiana Chapter recognized three exemplary projects, two Louisiana Great Places, and two officers who have served our chapter diligently and effectively for a number of years.

The 2017 Planning Award winners are:

1       Planning Excellence Award for a Plan

Gonzales Comprehensive Plan

                “…The Gonzales Plan is an appropriately comprehensive plan for a small city…it demonstrates the strategic importance of comprehensive and specific area planning in smaller cities across the state… early and immediate revision of land development codes is evidence of plan effectiveness…”

 

2       Planning Excellence Award for Implementation

FUTUREBR

                “…FUTUREBR implementation progress is an inspiring demonstration of planning to align various interests, coordinate diverse actions, measure progress toward big outcomes and as a tool to increase community collaboration capacities… This collective work, focused on positive long-term outcomes, is a tribute to leadership commitment to living plans providing pathways to an equitably prosperous future…”

 

3       Planning Excellence Award for a Process

Alexandria / Pineville Urbanized Area Metropolitan Transportation Plan 2040

                “…too often local governments tackle plans piecemeal and resulting plans are disjointed at best. The easy road is to hire a consultant… The Alexandria / Pineville MTP demonstrated innovation by developing a high level of comprehensiveness and meaningful public participation by using “in-house” resources, saving $400,000 and increasing local ownership of the plan…”

 

4       Great Places in Louisiana Public Space Award

New Orleans Lakefront Airport Terminal Building

                “The Lakefront Airport Terminal Building is a historical architectural gem for New Orleans and Louisiana… All involved in funding and restoring the building to its original grandeur deserve recognition and our thanks for a job well done to renew a great public space…”

 

5       Great Places in Louisiana Great Street Award

Shreveport's Texas Street, 600 and 700 Blocks

                “Shreveport public and private interests are breathing new life into two blocks along one of Louisiana’s historically significant urban streets – Texas Street. The progress is encouraging and deserves recognition of a Great Street Award.”
